LThe Auckland City Council met last evening - , the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, presiding. In anticipation of an interesting debate the public had crowded the gallery long before the meeting began and extra seating accommodation had to be provided on the floor of the council chamber. A donation of £IOO was made to the funds of the Workers’ Educational Association. Mr. C. E. Knight requested a donation toward his Winter Distress Fund. Tho Finance Committee will report. The Mayor was appointed council’s representative on the Auckland University College Council. Dot IS of the Civic Square subdivision has been leased to Thomas Howard Cunningham. Cr. ,T. B. Paterson was appointed council’s delegate to the Great South Road Beautifying Society in place of Mr. G. Knight who had resigned. A donation of £3O was made to the City Council Employees’ Voluntary Sick and Accident Society, which lias a membership of 150. To deaden the sound of vehicles outside tho Concert Chamber the council decided to spend £74 in covering the windows and ventilators with suitable drapings. =J= *s= m An application by Broadsiders, Ltd., for renting the new Western Springs stadium on Wednesday nights and any Saturday night from October 1 was referred to the Parks Committee for a report.
