FLOOD SUFFERERS
RELIEF FOR H.B. SETTLERS Press Association HASTINGS, Thursday. Relief for about 15 settlers who suffered a heavy loss as the result of the flooding of the Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro Rivers, Hawke’s Bay, was sought by Messrs. W. E. Barnard, M.P„ and Messrs. C. Lassen and N. P. Ericikson, who waited as a deputation on the Minister of Lands, Hon. G. W. Forbes. The Minister advised them to supply particulars to the Under-Secretary of Land, the only means of giving assistance being from the general purposes relief fund. The appeal would then go before the Treasury and the Minister of Finance. The fund existed for the purpose of giving assistance in necessitous cases. As far as a compassionate grant was concerned, that was for Parliament to consider, as the amount would have to go on the estimates.
