Devonport’s Record

NEWTON MAY BREAK IT Keen League Tussle Anticipated OCCUPYING second place in the senior competition and having shown excellent form in recent games, Newton can only be expected to make a good showing when it meets the so far invincible Shore Leaguers in the feature game at Carlaw Park tomorrow. Both of these teams play fast, open football and an interesting and true exhibition of the code is anticipated.

With the Shore forwards having J shown a marked improvement on form ! since last season, and the backs play- : ing brilliant football, it appears that j the odds must go in favour of the seasiders. Yet with Newton properly on | form and Dufty given a few chances to J use his boot to advantage, as he did j last Saturday, there is really no saying what may happen. On No. 2 ground at 3 o’clock City j will meet Marists, while in the cur- i

suits shown auger well for the high standard of senior football in the future. And the “younger fry” are certainly encouraged to take the greatest interest in the game when they are cared for so nobly by the parent body. At the conclusion of each season the teams winning the respective championships are all presented with caps at the expense of the Auckland Rugby League, while in travelling to out-of-

town grounds on the Saturday, players receive financial assistance to cover travelling expenses. All the junior League teams are favoured with coaches who, of course, must be given most of the credit for the high standard of play shown. * * *• Each week in these columns will appear notes on Junior Rugby League Mount Albert Leads Although enjoying only its second year of existence, the Mount Albert Club is well to the fore, and in the second grade, after last Saturday’s game’s games, when Shore and Alount AVellington both suffered defeat, Alount Albert takes the lead. Last season the majority of the team played third intermediate grade. Great Performance In the third open grade Richmond and Kingsland are both unbeaten. The Richmond side, at present skippered by Charlie Dunne, has had a remarkable career, in so far as it is practically the same side as that which once played 6A grade and has moved up a grade year by year winning the championship in every division. Shore Victories Shore leads in the third intermediate grade with three wins and one draw,

I while in the fourth grade the Shore . | team has not yet suffered defeat. After next Saturday the weigh- | ing allowance will be brought in. I The Mount Wellington C3ub is at present experiencing its firstt season, j and for a new club is doing remark- i ably well. Humour has it that there is ' considerable rivalry between Mount Wellington and Otahuhu, There are eleven teams of school hoys playing League this sea*- j .son, while in the junior grades are to ± be found quite a number of secondary j school boys. The Point Chevalier Club has only* j been on the map for about six years i and it features live teams —senior B, third open, fifth grade, sixth B and £ sixth A. All these teams are making * a good showing. In the fifth grade the unbeaten Rich- ! mond side leads the way. In fact, this : team has not had its line crossed this season. >Teither Richmond nor Marist in the sixth A grade, have suffered defeat so far this season, while in the sixth B grade both Richmond and Northcote ; are unbeaten. According to the great performances put up by the Richmond Club’s quota of junior teams, much is to be said for * the great organisation shown in this ; ' club.
