KEEN TO MARRY

YOUNG COUPLE MAKE FALSE DECLARATION FINE IMPOSED Anxious to be married, Alfred Vipond and his prospective bride, now Henrietta Elizabeth June Vipond, made a false declaration of age to obtain the necessary licence. The couple appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday. A plea for leniency toward the prisoners was made by Mr. G. F. Finlay. He said the pair had two eloquent advocates —youth and their past good character. The girl was really only an innocent victim. Vipond’s offence was dictated by a misguided sense of affection, but he had conscientious scruples concerning his action and finally gave himself up to the police, who, meantime had been prosecuting inquiries for him. His Honour reminded, the prisoners of the gravity of their offence in deliberately making a false document. If the parents had objected to the marriage, had you come to the Supreme Court for authority, the judge could have granted permission if he considered it advisable.” He marked his sense of gravity of the offence by fining Vipond £lO and costs of the prosecution. A week was allowed, in which to pay. default being fixed at three months’ hard labour. His wife was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
