BACK TO DOMESTICITY
N.Z. WOMEN’S WORK SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT I j New Zealand girls could be oneour- ' aged to take up domestic work ; gain, j I Business positions they now hold could :bo left open for young men seeking ' employment. Dr. E. P. Neale advanced this sugigestion for the relief of unemployment I i tentatively to the Economic Society ; | last evening. I Owing to the war, he said, the in- | i crease of women in commerce had been phenomenal. There was now an excess of women entrenched in city positions. There were 4,000 more boys, rclativo to population, searching for work. One point of relief was seen in the decreasing birth-rate right through the j world. Fewer young people would be j wanting work. There was also a j tendency in business to curtail the number of posts open to women. Or. Neale granted that his suggestion that women should turn their activities more to domestic work would be difficult to fulfil, because of the dislike among young women for household duties. The position could be eased by finding extra outlets for women in gaining employment cs by finding extra positions for young men.
