STEAM-PIPE BURSTS
MISHAP TO GOODS ENGINE FIREMAN SLIGHTLY HURT (Special to TIIE SUN) TAIHAPE, Wednesday. A goods train which left Ohakune at 4.20 a.m. yesterday for Marton had just passed Karioi when a steam pipe on the engine burst, causing an explosion, as a result of which the firebox blew back and the fireman, who was slightly burned, and the driver, were compelled to leave the engine. The steam escaping through the burst pipe caused the train to stop. Another engine was dispatched to the scene of the accident and the disabled engine was hauled back to Ohakune. Subsequently the train proceeded on its journey hours behind schedule time. At Matarqa, six miles north of Tailiape, while shunting operations were being carried out, the back bogey wheels of the engine left the rails and the train was further delayed for two and a-half hours while the derailed engine was replaced on the track. The train reached Taihape at 12.45 a.m. today, and departed for Marton after the engine had been changed.
