FROM COACHES TO CARS
COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S LONG SERVICE
RETIREMENT OF MR. H. M. CORBETT
(From Our Own Correspondent) PAEROA, Monday,
The chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, Mr. H. M. Corbett, resigned his position at the meeting of the council today. Mr. Corbett was first elected to the council in November, 1905. On November 22, 1911, he was elected chairman of the council, and remained in that office until May, 1916, when he resigned both positions. After a lapse of 10 years, Mr. Corbett returned to public life in May, 1926, being elected both councillor and chairman. Now, after 21 years of record service, his business affairs have called him to resign again.
Mr. Corbett was a very valuable member of the council, as he was thoroughly acquainted with every mile of the Thames Valley and Ohinemuri goldfields. The day after he was elected councillor, the railway to Waihi was declared open, so that Mr. Corbett has had experience of railway service, stage coaches and waggon teams, to motor-cars and commercial trucks,.
In 1915 Mr. Corbett saw the birth of the Paeroa Borough Council. At the last meeting of the council, the whole of the councillors expressed their appreciation of their retiring chairman’s services. Similar praise was accorded Mr. Corbett by the members of the Paeroa Borough Council.
