CHARGED WITH FRAUD
AUCTIONEER IN COURT BALANCE OF SALE PROCEEDS Press Association DUNEDIN, Monday. In the Police Court today, Thomas Scurr, auctioneer, was charged with fraudulently converting to his own use £ 252, being part of the proceeds of an assigned estate. Evidence was given that accused conducted a sale and the gross amount realised was £7Bl. Accused was to receive ordinary auctioneer’s commission on the sale, and after deducting it to pay £682. A cheque from accused for £4OO was paid by the bank, leaving a balance of £282 owing. Accused gave a cheque for the >oer amount, but this was not paid by the bank. Accused confessed to judgment for £282 and costs. In a statement to a detective accused said the muney was used by him in the course of his business, and he had expected his father to stand behind him in the matter. There was no necessity for him to pay the money received into his trust account. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. __
