VALUE OF A LEG
JURY AWARDS £l,lBO DAMAGES FOR VAN DRIVER Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. A motor-lorry, and a motor-van collided at the corner of Manchester Street and Oxford Terrace on December 7 of last year, with the result that the young man who drove one of the vehicles had on© leg amputated. In the Supreme Court tbday before Mr. Justice Adams and a jury, Victor Maurice Hooper claimed damages amounting to £1,680 6s 2d from the owners of the other vehicle, the Perfection Ice Cream Company. Hooper was a grocer’s assistant, and was driving his firm’s van. It was alleged that Smith, driver of defendant’s vehicle, failed to keep a proper lookout, travelled at an excessive speed, failed to keep on his proper side of the road, and failed to keep his lorry under proper control. The defence was a denial of negligence and an allegation of contributing negligence by Hooper. The jury awarded Hooper £l,lBO Gs 2d damages, with costs.
