PAEROA NEWS

SUBSIDY FOR UNEMPLOYED The Mayor of Paeroa. Mr. W. Mar. shall, has been advised that the Go\ernment has approved of an unemployment subsidy for the Borough of Paeroa, amounting to £7OO, on a £ for £ basis. * * * The Hon. W. B. Taverner. Minisieof Railways, has advised Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., that he will be please to visit the district to investigate the question of the construction of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway as early as he can. The .road from Waihi to Coromandt! is progressing as favourably as the weather permits. It will take a lons time to get through on account of the hilly nature of the country. There are large gangs of relief men employed and 50 more recently arrived from Auckland. Formation work is only at present being carried out. but the road will eventually be metalled. Before it is completed it will be a costly undertaking, and it remains to be seen if it will ever justify the costly outlay. The land for the most pan is by no means of good quality for dairying. About six miles from Waihi there is a holding of 3,000 acres of good land, where dairying is extensive/. 1 carried out. About 10 miles further on the land is of fair quality, but is covered with heavy ti-tree, and is suit* able for close settlement.
