NO DANGER TO TRAIN
OTIRA SUNDAY EXCURSIONS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. When the telegram from Christchurch with reference to an excursion train on Sunday being taken through the Otira Tunnel by steamv was referred to the officials at headquarters, it was stated that no official protest had been received from the enginedrivers. The chief mechanical engineer, Mr. Lynde, is emphatic that no risk whatever was involved, as heavier excursion trains than the one being discussed had been run by steam locomotives on grades quite as steep as that of the tunnel, which is 1 in 33. In this case there would, be no steaming in the tunnel, as the grade from Arthur’s Pass to Otira would permit of the locomotive which brought the train from Christchurch simply drifting down.
