MORE WORK

MT. ALBERT TO HELP UNEMPLOYED ROAD RECONSTRUCTION Permanent road reconstruction work will be begun in the borough of Mount Albert as soon as possible, according to a decision arrived at at last evening's meeting of the Borough Council. Mr. A. A. Buckley suggested that, { since last week's poll on the pro- j posals to provide additional play areas ; In the district had been favourable, j the work of constructing the areas ; should be begun at once. The Mayor, I Mr. L. E. Rhodes, however, explained j that plans and estimates had to be j completed and approved by the Local I Government Loans Board before the j work could be started. Mr. H. L. Kayes moved that 1 £150,000 should be spent on work for j the unemployed. As an amendment, j in order to comply with the procedure, the Mayor moved that the question should be referred to the joint committees with power to act. The amendment was carried, and it was decided to make some work immediately available, using money for works already authorised. The council received a letter from the Minister of Railways saying that he considered the warning signals at the Argyle Street and Gladstone Road crossings gave adequate protection. Since, however, the residents near the Argyle Street crossing desired an audible warning a “Pearson” signal, similar to the “wig-wag," might be installed there in place of the flashingsign, At present the department was carrying out experiments with gates and booms. Mr. H. L. Kayes said that there was always a risk that the present signal at Argyle Street might not work and ! he believed that the same trouble might be exjierienced with the “Pearson” sign. He moved, and the motion was carried, that the department be asked to provide a boom at the crossing. It v/as reported that during April permits were issued for buildings to a total value of £ 12,882. Of this total £12,038 was for dwelling houses and £234 for motor sheds.
