“THE KING OF KAWAU”

AT ST. JAMES ON FRIDAY Auckland Is already looking forward with keen interest to the University students’ production, “The King of Kawau,” to be presented at the St. James Theatre on Friday. “The King of Kawau” is probably the most ambitious project yet undertaken by the students. The dressing, for one thing, is particularly fine for an amateur production, the court scenes being especially brilliant. The dialogue, too, is witty and humorous, and abounds in general topicalities which should appeal to all Aucklanders. The ballets have been arranged by Mile. Valeska, and are unique in the history of University productions. The musical side is outstanding, not only because it was composed by Mr. Trevor Sparling, who will be the musical director, but because more numbers than usual have been incorporated. The cast itself is strong and well balanced. Mr. Fryer-Raisher. who takes the part of the Prince Dolphin, is no stran- ; ger to the Auckland public, and S a very popular amateur juvenile lead. : His fine tenor voice is well catered for ■ in this part, as also are his capabili- ! ties as an actor. Miss Freda Gaudin. who plays the , part of May opposite Mr. Fryer- ! 1 Raisher, makes a very picturesque and i ' dainty heroine. Her acting is natural, she has a sweet soprano voice, and possesses more than a small share of what we call personality.
