BRITAIN STILL LEADS
BUILDING OF SHIPS LOWER COSTS THAN U.S.A. (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. British shipbuilders are now competing successfully with American and Continental firms for the reason that, they are launchinng ships at a much lower cost, states the British Trade Commissioner’s Office. Recently the Gypsum Shipping’ Company, of New York, referring to orders placed by his firm with contractors at Haverton, England, stated that he had made inquiries on the North-east coast of the United Kingdom and discovered that prices were 40 per cent, lower than those in the United States. In addition, a firm which is building 24 barges at North Woolwich works for delivery to a coal service firm in the port of London has received an order for 48 more barges of the same type. This is hailed as additional evidence that shipbuilding is going back to British pre-war supremacy, as, prior to these orders, most of the work of this type was done in Holland.
