TEARING UP RAILWAY

WORK AT PALMERSTON MANY MEN TRANSFERRED (Special to THE SVXJ PALMERSTON 2ST., Satui-day. The work of clearing up the Palmerston North deviation is proceeding steadily. About 125 men have already been transferred to other works and only 70 remain. Twenty-five men declined a transfer and have been paid off. One engine and a little equipment still remains, as there are miles of track yet to be torn up. About 250 tons of rails have been sent to other works and one steam shovel has been removed to Gisborne. It will be some months before the final batch of workers can be withdrawn.
