ORPHANS OPEN SEASON
ONEHUNGA CLUB The ninth annual report presented at the annual meeting of the Onehunga Orphans’ Club, held recently, stated that the membership was 145. besides associate members of the orchestra. The balance sheet showed a surplus of assets over liabilities amounting to £272, the annual receipts of £367 leaving a surplus of £l2.
The following officers were elected: Patron, Sir Frederic Lang; president, Mr. R. Buchanan; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. Bray, J. E. Green, A. Ci. Houldsworth, H. Humphries, E. Marks, E. Morton and R. G. Speight; secretary, Mr. C. A. Osborne; treasurer, Mr. D. H. Kirk Jones; committee, Messrs. A. E. Brain. G. H. Bray, S. W. Brown, W. Lovering, C. F. Milnes, J. K. Ross, T J. Wathew and R. H. Wilson; stewards, Messrs. J. K. Ross (chief), H. Burridge, G. Crighton, F. Farnsworth, A. Jeffs, T. H. McKeever, T. Milton, W. J. Tegg, W. B. Vaughan, S. Vella and W. H. Wilkinson; auditor, Mr T. S Bassett; conductor. Mr. J. Lighton; accompanist, Mr. L. Elliott.
DEVONPORT CLUB’S FIRST SESSION The Devonport Orphans* Club began its 1929 session on Saturday evening at the Masonic Hall. Mr. E. Aldridge:, the new president, was in the chair. It Was announced that 28 new members had been enrolled. Reference was mado to the death of two past-presi-dents of the club, Messrs. Tapper and Handley, and to the recent death of Bro. Alf. Bartley, who had at one time conducted the club’s band. The orchestra this year is being conducted by Dr. Trevor de Clive Lowe, and it pleased the audience with its overtures. Concert items were supplied by Messrs. D. Flood. Muston, jun., Snell, Rex Yates, H. Richards, and Campbell. The Hon. E. W. Alison gave two recitations. Mr. L. Elliot was accompanist. Fraternal greetings were received from Auckland Orphans. Northcote and Birkenhead Orphans, Kindred Clubs’ Association, and Mr. George Sollitt, former secretaary of the club, now resident at Port Chalmers. The Otahuhu Club was represented by Mr. George Pearce, and the Takapuna Club by Messrs. Archibald and Wilson. The club members recorded a resolution of sympathy with past-president Bro. J. Armstrong, for many years actively identified with the club, but who is now confined to his home through, ill-health.
