MARAMA SAILS
QUICK REPAIRS TO ENGINES NEEDLESS FAREWELLS Shortly before she was ready to sail at three o’clock yesterday afternoon an accident occurred to the engines of the Union Company’s Marama which dela ved her departure until noon today. The accident occurred as the engineers were testing the engines, as is usually done before a vessel leaves for sea. The engines had turned the propeller only a few revolutions when the mid - pressure balance cylindercover broke and put the engines out of action. No time was lost in dismantling the broken cover and making arrangements to have a irw one cast in its place. The work was put in hand at once, the new cover was completed this morning and the vessel took her departure shortly after noon today for Sydney. There was considerable disappointment among the passengers when ir. was announced that the steamer would not sail before today. For some time passengers and friends had been bolding various coloured streamers and exchanging good-bye messages. Shortly afterward the passengers were informed of the delay and were given, passes to go ashore. They were allowed to sleep on board last night if they so desired. This concession was taken advantage of by a number of them while others preferred to return to their homes until today.
