BORROWED UNDER ASSUMED NAME CANVASSER TAKEN TO TASK Soliciting loans under a false name is a practice that is frowned upon by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. 'J’HIS morning, at the Police Court. he censured Albert Edward Fogarty, a canvasser, aged 3S, who admitted that he had obtained 2s 6d from Lionel Balter by falsely representing that he was employed by a city firm of decorators. Another charge of obtaining 2s 6d from Kenneth Bush was also admitted. Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared for Fogarty. The Magistrate: How did he get the money? Cadging in the street? Sub-Inspector McCarthy: Mo. As neither Baker nor Bush would give him money without knowing who he was, he told them that his name was Keevey, and that he worked in the city. “He seems to have a foolish idea that as long as he is only borrowing he is quite all right.” The subinspector mentioned that Fogarty had not been before a court since 1925. According to Mr. Sullivan, accused had once held a responsible position in the Government service. Domestic troubles had preyed on his mind and led him to behave as he had done. “I cannot understand it,” said counsel. “Had he come to me 1 should not have minded giving him a pound. He is a thoroughly decent fellow."
Mr. Hunt ordered Fogarty to come up for sentence when called upon. “Give him a good talking to,” was his parting advice to counsel.
