TRAM EXTENSIONS
WORKERS SHOW INTEREST PREFERENCE TO LOCAL MEN Exceptional interest has already been shown by unemployed workers in the announcement made yesterday by Mr. J. A. C. Allum. chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, that no time would be lost in starting and pressing forward the board's big tramway development scheme made possible by the carrying of the £526,000 loan proposal. MR. ALLUM mentioned to The Sun this morning that the board would establish a. very definite policy with regard to employment on projected works. “It is the board’s intention to give preference to workers living in or adjacent to the hoard's area.” said the chairman. "This is being done in order to prevent a rush of unemployed labourers from other centres.” It was indicated in this paper yesterday that organisation for starting tramway extensions promised to be completed and put into practice in record time. There is to be no delay, and it is hoped that some of the works will he begun before mid-winter has added to unemployment distress.
