KAIAPOI DELAYED
FIREMEN REFUSE TO SAIL IS IT JOB CONTROL? Twenty-four hours’ notice has been given the crew of the Union Company's collier Kaiapoi, now berthed at the Western Wharf, as the firemen refuse to take the vessel to sea unless a fireman selected by themselves is signed on in place of a man who left the vessel on arrival at Auckland. The Kaiapoi was to leave Auckland at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon for Westport, thence to Grey mouth, to load again for this port. Efforts were made by the company to reason with the men, as the vessel had her full complement, but firemen remained adamant. As their was no hope of the Kaiapoi sailing last evening, her departure was postponed until noon today, when it was thought that the men would by that time be more reasonable. When the time came to sail today, the firemen still refused to take the vessel away, and the company had no other option but to give the crew 24 hours’ notice and pay them off, laying up another vessel. In certain quarters among shipping it is thought that this is an attempt at job control.
