DISEASE INCREASES
APRIL NOTIFICATIONS AUCKLAND FIGURES Cases of infectious diseases, among which scarlet fevev-, dysentery and diphtheria are prominent, have been reported to the Health Department from the Auckland Province in unusually large numbers during April. The total of 493 represents an increase of 217 ovei’ the previous month. CEASES of dysentery totalled ISS, J these being confined to the central and South Auckland areas. It is reported that the outbreak is now on the wane. The diphtheria cases number 72, as compared with 37 in March, but the department considers that there is no cause for alarm, as the outbreak is not in the nature of an epidemic. The number of scarlet fever cases is 130, of these 34 being in South Auckland, 16 in North Auckland, 59 in the central district, and 21 in the ThamesTauranga district. In the previous two months the total was 65. Pneumonic influenza is still on the decline, only five cases being reported in the whole of the province. The distribution of the cases according to the districts is as follows, the figures for the previous month being given in parentheses; North Auckland, 39 (28); Central Auckland, 214 (152); South Auckland. 200 (74); ThamesTauranga, 40 (22).
