YOUTH’S GRAVE CRIME
GUILT ESTABLISHED BRUTALITY AT HERNE BAY As a sequel to a brutal assault on a girl at Herne Bay on January 23, William Gibson, aged 18, stood his trial at the Supreme Court today on a charge of rape. He was represented by Mr. G. P. Finlay. Gibson was alleged to have committed the crime after the girl had been criminally assaulted by a young man named Capel, who was yesterday found guilty of assaulting the girl with intent to commit rape. Mr. V. N. Hubble, who appeared for the prosecution, had the same evidence that was placed before the jury which convicted Capel. Gibson, in evidence, said lie had merely comforted the girl, who was very upset after the assault. He denied absolutely that he had made assault on the girl. The jury found Gibson guilty of rape and sentenced was deferred until tomorrow morning.
