SUSPICIOUS LOITERING

VAGRANT GIVEN CHANCE The furtive behaviour of Daniel McEwan who, for two nights, has been loitering round shop doorways in Hobson Street, led a constable to arrest him very early this morning. At the Police Court McEwan, a fireman, aged 42, was charged with vagrancy. He pleaded guilty to being idle. The constable -who arrested McEwan was of the opinion that he had been drinking, but was quite well aware of what he was doing. He had been trying the doors of shops in Hobson Street. McEwan explained that he was a seaman and could not get work, his last position having been in December, 1928. Staff-Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, offered to find assistance for McEwan until he obtained employment, and the man was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon.
