Mother Vents Anger In a Classroom

TEACHER VILIFIED FINE OF TWO POUNDS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wed. Having created a scene in a classroom of Wool ion School, the mother of a pupil today was fined £2 in the Magistrate's Court for wilfully causing a disturbance. YTCTORIA FRANCES MAT LANE answered the prosecution, which was a private one, the complainant being Gwendoline Bowring, a teacher at the school. It was alleged that when Miss Bowring was teaching a class at the Woolston School, Mrs. Lane rushed into the room, and said: “I’ll show you up. You hit my girl over the head with a packet of books.” Mrs. Lane also alleged that Miss Bowring had thrown a strap at her child. Miss Bowring remonstrated with the intruder for speaking in such a manner to her in the classroom, and denied having struck the child or thrown a strap. Miss Bowring took Mrs. Lane to the headmaster, blit Mrs. Lane returned to the classroom. She was heard questioning the children and was also heard to call Miss Bowring “a dirty liar.” It was stated in evidence that Mrs. Lane had apologised to Miss Bowring for her conduct, hut the Teachers’ Institute wished Miss Bowring to prosecute in order to stop such intrusions and disturbances in schools. Mrs. Lane denied that she created a disturbance or used the words complained of. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed.

TEACHER ASSAULTED WOMAN FINED £1 Press Association DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Janet Elizabeth McKay appeared in the Dunedin Police Court today on a charge of assaulting a woman school teacher. Evidence showed that the woman was dissatisfied with the teacher’s methods, and visiting the school grounds struck her a severe blow on the face. The magistrate said an assault on a teacher was serious. Defendant seemed to he a woman of violent temper and quite unable to control herself as the average woman did. He did not want to impose too heavy a penalty, but defendant would be fined 20s and solicitor’s fee, £2 2s.
