AMERICAN TARIFF
WAVE OF DISCONTENT CAUSED FARMERS DISSATISFIED (Australian and 'N.Z. Press Association) NEW YORK, Tuesday. An examination of the United States new tariff schedules, which total 87,000 words, for duties on products any considerable quantities of which are exported by Australia to the United States discloses that fruits are in certain cases mentioned by name and duties are specifically fixed. Generally, however, fresh fruits and dried fruits are taxed 35 per cent, ad valorem, dried apricots half a cent a pound, dried peaches two cents a pound, prunes one cent a pound, raisins two cents a pound. Furs (dressed on the skin) are taxed 25 per cent, ad valorem, hatters’ furs (or furs not on the skin) 35 per cent, ad valorem, tallow half a cent a pound, eucalyptus oil 25 per cent, ad valorem. Pearl shell is on the free list. An Associated Press telegram from Washington says a wave of discontent ran through the Republican groups in the I-louse of Representatives to-day over the Tariff Bill. Agricultural spokesmen declare that agriculture has not received the protection the farmers had a right to expect and that on. the other hand the rates proposed on certain manufactured articles will impose a heavy burden on the farmers. The Western Progressives predict that the fight ov.er the tariff will be one of the most bitter contests ever waged against a Republican tariff. Also it is expected that certain organised farm groups will join the ranks of those opposed to the proposed schedules.
