Ghastly Work

PREMIER’S SON KILLED BY ASSASSINS SHIELDED HIS FATHER (United P.A.—Bp Telegraph — Copyright) Times Cable LONDON, Tuesday. The Riga correspondent of “The Times” says another of the victims of the shooting outrage at Kovno, Lithuania, yesterday has succumbed to his injuries, namely the foster son of the Premier. Dr. Voldemaras. Eye-witnesses relate pathetic stories of the affair. They say there were four assailants who were armed with revolvers and bombs. They attacked the Premier’s party outside the State Theatre. When the first shots rang out Lieutenant Guidinas, Dr. Voldemaras’s grand-nephew, attempted to shield the Premier, but fell dead. He had been wounded in the head and twice in the body. Two bullets following the fatal shots pierced the dress of Madame Voldemaras and others struck the Premier’s foster-son and Captain Verhitakis, his aide-de-camp. Dr. Voldemaras was assisted by another man to carry his foster son into the theatre where he was operated upon. The escape of the assailants was assisted by the darkness and the trees in the park surrounding the theatre. The greatest indignation is felt at Kovno where many anti-Polish speeches have been delivered. The speakers alleged that the assailants spoke English and were Polish agents. Dr. Voldemaras addressed a great demonstration outside his residence. He said bombs and revolvers would not prevent a continuance of his fight for the independence of Lithuania. A reward equivalent to £I,OOO has been offered for information which will lead to the arrest of the murderers.
