PRELIMINARY INQUIRY The Auckland superintendent of the ! Mercantile Marine is holding a prelim- | inary inquiry into the collision between ! the Northern Company’s steamer j Rangitoto and the launch Alert, which , occurred off Devonport last T riday | evening, when the launch was sunk. \ After the inquiry is completed the ■ documents will be forwarded to the j Marine Department headquarters in Wellington, which will decide if a j magisterial inquiry is necessary.
