HEAVY RAIN AT WHANGAREI
LAUNCH SHELTERS AT WAIPU (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. Rain fell continuously on Monday, and up till last night the weather had shown no signs of breaking. The rainfall for 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock on Monday totalled 2.94 inches, buinging Sunday’s and Monday’s total to 3.37 Drainage works in Lower Bank Street have suffered considerably, and mounds of yellow clay have converted that area into a quagmire. The adverse weather conditions outside the harbour have caused Mr. R. Patterson’s tow-boat Eva to find shelter at Waipu. An attempt was made to cross the bar at the harbour mouth, but a tremendous wave swept the barge clear of the sand, and further attempts to cross were abandoned. She is expected to negotiate the bar today.
