AUSTRALIAN TROTTERS
SYSTEM OF HANDICAPPING Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday The committee of the New Zealand dotting Board reported to-night on handicapping of horses imported Australia. The committee recomf»TWK t^iat - Pending some agreement and 0 point between the New Zealand •ii ustra ban controlling bodies, lianh*«fi? >€rs should be recommended to *r ndxoap horses imported from Aus- # lH h *v:ng run two seconds faster ’hr ° ne or a naile and a-quarter. seconds faster for one mile and for* and four seconds faster faster rrrni i ° miles than their Australian 8 * or these distances show. It f op f J*^^ es ted that the main reasons ••nm* succe ss of recent importations Hnd f ustrali a were that the New Zea*Tjffi^tracks were faster and that inparticulars were supplied a.ne* s the list of Australian performWas adopted and it was f t to send it to the handicappers. as also decided to renew efforts
to obtain reciprocal arrangements with Australian States in regard to the handicapping of New Zealand and Australian horses. Owners’ Hardship The recommendation made in respect to the question of handicapping Australian horses is a drastic one as far as those owners who have just recently landed horses from the Commonwealth are concerned. Stoney, who arrived a couple of weeks ago, was brought on a 4.35 mark and the trotter Reynard, which arrived yesterday, was secured with a 4.47 record. Considering their purchases would be treated on the same terms as previous arrivals from over the Tasman, the Auckland owners paid a price accordingly, but if the recommendation is enforced the horses mentioned will be placed on 4.31 and 4.43 respectively. As 'both are well up in years their relative values on these marks will be discounted and it is a big hardship on the enterprising enthusiasts. It would only be reasonable for a proviso, covering horses that had just landed or been purchased prior to the date of the committee making its suggestion, being added. Abaydos.
