MORNINGSIDE TUNNEL
EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE MADE ESTIMATING THE COST Mr. -T. S. Fletcher, M.P.. who communicated with the Minister of Railways recently regarding: the proposal t n build an underground tunnel under Auckland to Morningside, has received the following reply from the Hon. W. B. Taverner: •The position is that the matter is the subject of departmental investigation by a committee of executive officers, who will collate all essential facta to enable us to get down to a proper basis for calculation. The first rssential is to prepare an estimate of the cost based on present-day information and prices. This should be ready in about a week’s time, when consideration of the traffic and economic factors will be undertaken. I am endeavouring to finalist* the matter at the earliest moment. We desire that any decision reached shall be on a basis that will enable a decision to be made by the Government and accepted by all concerned with confidence.”
