MOVEMENTS ON CHANGE

THE WEEK REVIEWED GILT-EDGED MARKET FIRM Sun Office, 9 a.m. By “NOON CALL.’’ I The week ended yesterday afternoon was one of the quietest recorded on ’Change for several months. j During the past day or so there j have been some slight upward move- ! ments in the banking group. Nationals of Australasia moved up 2s 6d yesterday. Even at the latest price for both issues, £9 16s and £l9 16s for the contributing and paids respectively, the scrip offers the best immediate return in the group. The return at the moment is just over . 5 per cent., but when it is remembered that an interim dividend is due at the end of this month, the shares offer even greater attention. They are certainly a sound investment as the company' is a progressive one, and there are possibilities of new capital issues as the bank’s business expands. New South Wales shares moved up 5s in the South yesterday afternoon. Unions of Australia improved Is over the week. The rest of the group has been quiet. Insurances have mostly attracted only a nominal attention. New Zealands show a slight improvement. Nationals are Id better. A.P.A.’s meet with a steady inquiry and have sold at from 10s to 10s 3d, compared with 10s 6d on the Sydney market. The gas section has shown increased activity over the past 24 hours, tending to move toward higher levels, in some instances higher than prospects for that class of investment justify. New Zealand Breweries have been steadily moving toward higher levels during the week, reaching 64s 3d in Christchurch yesterday afternoon. The return at this price is well under that for the best insurance and banking shares, and from the point of view of a sound investment, Breweries offer much less attraction. Little movement has been shown in. the miscellaneous group. Interest in mining scrip has slackened during the week. There is not the buoyancy shown in the group a week ago. All Government and local-body securities meet with a very steady demand. Buyers predominate. Prices remain very firm on recent levels. Return on Investment Below is a summary of sales made on ’Change over the week ended May 7. giving the return on investment based on the latest dividend. In the case of Government and other redeemable debentures the return includes redemption. In the first column are the prices at which the latest sales were made: Bates t Approx. Price. Return.

-No attempt is made to work out the ! return on mining scrip, sales of which I are merely included in this list for record purposes.
