SIMON NOT IMMUNE

CONSERVATIVES WILL CONTEST SEAT

ELECTION IN BRITAIN {Australian and N.Z. Press Association J LONDON, Friday. The Conservatives have decided, in view of Sir John Simon's attacks upon the Government and his active support of Mr. Lloyd George, to contest his seat, Spen Valley, Yorkshire, which previously they had intended not to contest in view of Sir John’s services in India on the Indian Commission. It is understood that the Government intends to issue a manifesto next week, dealing with the improved educational facilities. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, the Leader of the Labour Party, speaking at Port Talbot, South Wales, said the new Government, of whatever colour it might be, would enter upon an inheritance more bankrupt than any Government in Britain had ever before faced. It was going to he no easy task. The great problem would be that of reconditioning the country. Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, Labour member for Ogmore, Glamorganshire, speaking at Maesteg, predicted that, if a Labour Government were not returned, there would be a great crisis in the coal trade at the end of the year, when the existing agreements expired. A British Official Wireless message says it is anticipated that 80 women will be nominated as candidates for the election, which -takes place on May 30. This number compares with 41 at the last General Election.
