WEATHER FREAK
CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE 80 DEGREES IN 24 HOURS Brilliant sunshine bathed most of Britain on March 12, a strange contrast to the same day last year when frost prevailed and fierce snowstorms made roads impassable. The sunshine would have done credit to June, the temperature bounding up into the sixties after thick fog and keen frost in the early hours. Greenwich statistics, which extend back to 1841, show that he thermometer has never previously mounted above the 60 mark on more than three consecutive days before the middle of March. Many regions again experienced a switchback change from mid-winter cold to midsummer warmth within a few r hours. At South Farnborougli the mercury dropped from 6Sdeg. on Sunday afternoon to 25deg. at sunrise next day, and then leapt up into the sixties once more—a total variation of more than 80deg. in 24 hours!
