BASIC WAGE INCREASE
AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY’S NEW BURDEN SERIOUS CONCERN FELT SYDNEY, Thursday. In a statement issued by the Overseas Shipping. Representatives’ Association it says it views with concern the additional heavy burden placed upon shipowners by the 4s a week increase in the basic wage in Australia, which will largely benefit the waterside workers. It is estimated that the increase will cost the shipowners £IOO,OOO a year, apart from from £23,000 a year, the cost to them of the reimposition of the Child Endowment Tax. The chairman of the Australian Woolgrowers’ Council has issued a statement to the effect that the rise in the Federal basic w r age would inas the w r ool market was down by 25 evitably lead to more unemployment, per cent. Graziers would have to look round for some way of reducing overhead charges.
