TAKAPUNA ORPHANS

FIRST 1929 SESSION HELD The president, Bro. W. Blomfield controlled the gavel at the opening session for 1929 of the Takapuna Orphans’ Club, held at the Masonic Hall last evening-. Visitors included representatives from Auckland, Oneliunga and other .suburban orphans' clubs. Under the baton of Mr. Chas. Woods, the club’s orchestra acquitted itself well in its chosen numbers. An enjoyable programme was contributed to by Messrs. F. McCallum, W. Mellor, Frank Sutherland and the Carolinian Five Jazz Orchestra. Mr. W. Swain was the accompanist. A short business session was held prior to the social. The balance sheet for the 1928 session was presented. Assets totalled £B9, with liabilities standing at nil. The secretary, Mr. C. E. Archibald, made a direct appeal to members to inculcate into the affairs of the club the true spirit of Orphandom. He said that it was the duty of everyone to make even the shyest of members realise that they were valued members of the club. The true Orphan spirit was one of intermingling sociability. A hearty spirit of goodwill would destroy any tendency toward the formation of ’’cliques" and would make one big family of “good fellows.”
