City Council Drastically Reshuffled
FIVE SrniNG MEMBERS AMONG DEFEATED
Eight New Councillors: Mr. Allum Loses Seat
ALTHOUGH the polling in the City Council election reveals nothing approaching a clean sweep ** the electorate rejected five out of the 18 old members who sought re-election. Among the defeated councillors were two chairmen of committees, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, waterworks, and Mr. S. I. Crookes, town-planning. A feature of the voting was the remarkable success of a newcomer, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, who topped the list. Mr. T. Bloodworth, who in variably scores well, was second. Both candidates reached five-figure support. Labour’s numerical position is not as strong as before. The old council seated four members of that party, Messrs. O. Mcßrine, G. Davis, E. J. Phelan and T. Bloodworth. Mr. Davis retired and Mr. Mcßrine has been defeated. Against these losses is the return of a new man, Mr. F. N. Bartram. New members of the council are:—Messrs. G. AY. Hutchison, F. N. Bartram, G. Grey Campbell, B. L. Bagnall, J. R. Lundon, B. M. Irvine, G. L. Brownlee and H. P. Burton. Councillors who unsuccessfully sought re-election are : Messrs. J. A. C. Allum, S. I. Crookes, O. Mcßrine, J. W. Carr and J. W. Kealy. The two last-named joined the old council during its term, Mr. Carr being one of two Tamaki representatives and Mr. Kealy one of three from Avondale. Both the women members of the 1927 council, Miss Ellen Melville and Miss Alice Basten, were returned, but none of the other women, candidates was successful. When the mayoral count had been disposed of, Mr. P. F. Notley, city returning officex-, and his colleagues began the laborious task of totalling the City Council voting. This was started at 9.30 and Air. Notley was able to announce a provisional return at 1.45 this morning—rather earlier than had been anticipated. The record list of candidates —67 in all—created a work of great magnitude. An official count has yet to take place and may result in alteration of placing of candidates hovering between victory and defeat. Yoting was as follows—members of the old council being indicated by an asterisk: —
