BIBLE THE BEST-SELLER
11,500,000 COPIES ISSUED LAST YEAR
BARRED ONLY IN RUSSIA (United Service) LONDON, Tuesday. The Bible is still the world’s “bestseller.” The annual report o£ the British and Foreign Bible Society shows that in the past year 11,500,000 copies were issued.
This is a record, being nearly 500,000 more than in the previous year. The sales increased everywhere except In Russia, which is closed to the society’s agents. The secretary of the society, the Rev. E. Smith, says there are nowcomplete Bibles in 146 languages, complete New Testaments in 150, smaller parts of the Bible in 322. In the past quarter of a century the society has printed the Scriptures in a fresh language every five weeks.
This is a record in translation work which has benefited many parts of the world, particularly Africa, where the Scriptures now are translated into 203 languages.
