BOXING TOURNEY

TE AWAMUTU MATCHES (From Our Own Correspondent) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. The principal bout at the boxingtourney staged by the Te Awamutu Young Men’s Institute on Monday evening was the challenge for the; Muir Challenge Cup between F. Fraei (Auckland), 9.12, and C. Craig (Te Awamutu), 9.10. The first round opened briskly, the visitor doing most of the leading, but Craig was willing. In the second round there were good rallies in the closing stages. Craig twice landed to the head in the third session. The Aucklander shot, a left to the jaw. When the gong went the local lad was leading on points. The fourth round saw Fraei shoot his right home to the ribs, and also score with two right-hand swings. The fifth round was willing. Fraei went to a clinch to avoid punishment, and then shot his left to Craig’s jaw. The final round was hard-fought. Fraei went in only to be met with a right to the face. Three times they clinched, and when the gong sounded there appeared little between them. Mr. Gus Venn, the referee, gave the verdict to Craig. The bout between Roper (Taumarunui), 9.8, and A. Craig (Te Awamutu), 9.8, proved a lively contest, the decision going to Craig. Mr. Venn declared a draw in an exhibition bout between H. Bennett (Te Awamutu), 9.6, and Jock Wilson (Frankton), 10.10. R. Fraei (Auckland). 9.2, defeated Mutton (Frankton), 9.5. The first two rounds were evenly contested, and in the third term there was plenty doing, straight lefts, swings and body punches being frequent. The final round was willing, with Fraei doing the most effective work, and was getting the decision. Carr (Frankton), 8.6, gained -a. narrow win over Williams (Hamilton), 8.6. W. Lett (Taupiri), 12.8, gained the verdict over E. Holmes (Te Awamutu), 12.1. P. Bowler (Frankton), 8.0, defeated E. Horan (Te Awamutu), 8.0. Lewis (Pirongia), 9.1, beat F. Laskey (Te Awamutu), 9.1. Pratt (Frankton), beat P. Harford (Te Awamutu).
