STRANGLED AND ROBBED
ENGLISH GIRL FOUND IN WOODS SLAYER’S FUTILE FLIGHT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The finding in the Woods of the murdered body of an English teacher, Eva Brand, has led to the disclosure of a remarkable story. A young blacksmith named Charles Bentz is alleged to have confessed that he had an English lesson from Miss Brand. He followed her to the woods, strangled her and took her valuables. Then he went to his sweetheart’s house and confessed the deed. Bentz then fled. Soon after, a young woman saw him hanging on a tree. She cut him down and he recovered. The police overtook him at a river bank. Bentz swam tbe stream and discarded his clothes as he resumed his flight, but he was captured after a long pursuit.
