MR. MACKENZIE ATTACKED
HARBOUR BOARD QUESTIONS MR. E. ALLAN’S ADDRESS A large audience greeted Mr. E. Allan at Oahubu last evening, when he addressed a meeting on harbour affairs. Mr. Allan spoke largely on the lines of his previous addresses., but took Mr. Mackenzie to task for misquoting figures in connection with the expenses of the visit of the Duke of York. Mr. Allan read from the Harbour Board statement of 1927, giving the figures as £2,335, against Mr. Mackenzie’s £1,990. Mr. Mackenzie, he said, was evidently using figures of his own, which all went to prove the speaker’s repeated assertion that Mr. Mackenzie thought he was the Harbour Board, lock, stock and barrel. It was high time that the worth I of other member* of the board was recognised. Mr. Allan also blamed Mr. Mackenzie for saying that the board was unanimous in its desire for Mr. Mackenzie to be returned. Members of the board had come to the speaker and told him that this was not so, and that the question of tlie Franklin and Manukau Counties’ representative was for the electors of those districts to decide. Mr. Allan deprecated the spoliation of the beauty spots of Auckland’s Harbour, and promised that, if he were returned as the district member, he would endeavour to save the lemaining beautiful points, which were the admiration of all visitors. Mr. Allan answered several questions at the close of his address and was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
