Intoxicated Driver Pays Double Penalty

NO LICENCE FOR YEAR FINE OF £SO IMPOSED Double punishment was meted out at the Police Court this morning to Alfred Jackson, who was fined £SO for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-vehicle. His driving licence was cancelled for a year. Mr. T. Holmden appeared for Jackson, a carrier, aged 43, and entered a plea of guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy described the incidents that resulted when Jackson backed his truck all the way across Victoria Street. The truck had collided with a tram and the motorman, surprised at the peculiar way the truck had been handled, alighted from his tram to investigate. “He found the driver intoxicated,” concluded the subinspector. “A woman who has already been fined for drunkenness this morning, was sitting up in the truck beside him.” Mr. Holmden admitted that his client had disposed of a few drinks on his way from Waiuku yesterday. He was a married man, highly respected in Waiuku and had never been in trouble before. Counsel asked for the imposition of as light a penalty as possible, as the damage to Jackson’s truck wouM be about £ 50. He also asked for time to pay, suggesting a month. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: No, no, we don’t want constables to spend their time running after him. Make it 14 days. Default was fixed at three months’ imprisonment.
