TAKAPUNA BOROUGH

COUNCIL’S FINAL MEETING The Takapunu Borough CoLincil held its final meeting before the local body elections on Wednesday' evening. The Auckland Gas Co., Ltd., submitted prices for the tarring and shelling of footpaths from Corella Road to Aloana Avenue, £25, and the righthand side from Beresford Street to Bayswater Wharf, £lls. The council resolved to decline the company’s offer, and to do the work with its own staff. q In addition, it was resolved to put in hand *he tarring and shelling of the whole length of the paths on both sides of Byron Avenue (£97 10s), and the southern side of Napier Avenue to Eldon Street (£23). The solicitors for Alessrs. Mount, Ltd., sub-contractors for work done on the Inga Road bridge over the Wairau Creek by the bankrupt estate of A. G. Fraser, notified their refusal to accept the councils offer of £IOO in settlement of the account of £214. It was stated that they were willing to compromise at £2OO. The matter was referred to the finance and legal committee. A ratepayer wrote stating that the Blackrock sewerage outfall pipe was broken in at least four places when it was being installed. He expressed the fear that if the damage were not rectified, sewage might possibly come ashore. The borough engineer stated that flanges were to be fitted round the fractures, and that when the job was taken over from the contractor it would be found to be superior to the original pipe as regards strength. Hurstmere Road, from Hall’s Corner to the post office, is to be recoated with bitumen. A request was made by the headmaster of the fakapuna School, Mr. G. H. Matthews, for the allocation of £IOO for the completion of the second playing area in Taharoto Park, the sum to be used in relief of unemployment. Application will be made to the Government for a £ for £ subsidy upon the £IOO, and also upon £64 available from the proceeds of last year’s floral fete and the Poppy Day collections, the total to be expended upon the park.
