REVENUE OR BEAUTY

HOARDINGS AT DEVONPORT COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE A suggestion that hoarding be removed altogether from Devonport borough was made at the council meeting on Wednesday, when an application was received for permission to erect 40 hoardings along the Lake Road, the boundary of the Takapuna racecourse. Cr. T. Walsh, who made the suggestion, said this would be unique in New Zealand, and would give Devonport a species of moral leadership in civic affairs. The Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, argued that, while the borough had a by-law prohibiting the erection of further hoardings along the main roads, this application might receive consideration on the grounds that it would bring in some revenue. The site was away from the residential portion of the borough. The application was refused.
