Arrival of Prince Stirs Loyal Chinese
GUNS BOOM IN WELCOME HONGKONG’S ROYAL GUEST (United Service) Reed. 7.30 a.m. HONG-KONG, ThursBritish warships thundered a salute as Prince Henry stepped ashore at Hong-Kong this morning. He was received by the Governor. The streets were lined with soldiers and sailors, the Prince making a triumphant tour of the city en route to the City Hall, where addresses of welcome were presented. A feature of the proceedings was that a magnificent four-fold Chinese screen, exquisitely carved and embroidered, six feet high, was given by the Chinese community, whose address, accompanying the gift, contained this most quaint utterance: “The people, old and young, make manifest their delight; they run hither and thither, eager in the joy of seeing your Royal person; from the depths of their hearts they pay their tribute of loyalty to his Majesty the King.”
The Prince is staying here three days and then proceeding to Japan aboard H.M.S. Suffolk. He is going to Tokyo to present to the Emperor Hirohito the insignia of the Garter.
