DEATH OF A MAORI CONTRACTOR’? fSpecial to THE SUNJ TAUM ARUNUI Monday The death of Tukotah Puhia. also known as Tom Roma. who met his death by being covered with a fall of earth at Okahukura on Saturday, formed the subject of an inquest by the district coroner, Mr. A. S. Laird, to-day. Thomas J. Pendray saM he was a contractor engaged by the Public Works Department at Okahukura. Puhia was working on filling drays from a side-cutting of pumice on the Okahukura-Ongarue Road. On arriving at work at about 7.35 a.m. on Saturday, witness saw a slip, and surmised that a man was underneath. He sent for assistance, and men arrived quickly and commenced to clear the slip away. They moved about eight feet of the slip before recovering the body. The man was dead. Puhia had been in good health, and started work before the usual time on Saturday morning, as he wanted to get away early in the afternoon. Medical evidence showed that death was due to asphyxia, caused by suffocation. The inquest was adjourned to obtain the evidence of deceased's relatives.
