AMERICAN WHEAT
SCIENTIFIC PURCHASES N.Z. MILLER IMPRESSED The American system of buying wheat according to its protein content has impressed Mr. Andrew S. Fleming, of Fleming and Company, Ltd., Gore, who returned to New Zealand on the Aorangi last evening after a business trip to the U.S.A. and Canada. “Wheat buying and, consequently, wheat milling have been put on a more scientific basis by this system.’ he told The Sun. “The % is a proper schedule of basic prices and when delivery is made and the product analysed, a premium is paid on the protein content.” One mill he visited made an analysis of its flour, and each batch was given a guaranteed content, after which the price was fixed so as to assure a certain margin of profit. Mr. Fleming said that the system was being investigated in New Zealand by the Research Department of the Government, and there was a possibility of it being introduced here. He was satisfied that it would improve milling conditions. It was very evident, he added, that the milling business in America was suffering from over-production and Canadian mills were said to be making nothing because of competition from the United States. In some cases the tariff regulations were being over come by milling wheat under bond and shipping through Canada to Great Britain.
