MAKING GOOD ROADS

WORK IN WAITEMATA Twenty-one chains of concrete road°n the N orthcote main high wav had been opened for traffic during the month, according to the report of the enginer, Mr. Andrew Murray, at the meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday. During the month, the bitumen penetration work on the Birkenhead main highway had been continued, but on account of the wet weather it was questionable whether anv further bitumen-laying could be done on this road during the present season. In the same riding, the Onewa Road another main highway, had been completed, while 87 chains of Rosedale Road had been completely metalled. The Right Hon. J. G. On the Kumeu-Albany main highway, earthwork operations had been completed, while the metalling operations were following as quickly as possible. There now remained only 3 5 chains to be completed, with base metal to give the first access over this route. In ,the Wainui riding, the Wainui bridge had been completed, although the approaches had yet to be finished The contractor for widening a mile and a-half of the Waiwera-Upper Waiwera main highway had completed his work, and arrangements had been made with him to widen a further 40 chains by day labour. Arrangements had also been made to expedite completion of the Waiwera Bridge apT proach, and double shifts were now being worked. During the month the staff had been busy preparing and forwarding to the Public Works Department and Main Highways Board claims for grant works completed and in hand, and, as the result of these claims, approximately £15.000 had been collected during the month of March, at the end of the financial year.
