RABBITS NOT DESTROYED
FARMER FINED £lO Press Association WAIPTJKURAU, Friday. A farmer. Donald McLeod, the owner of 1901 acres at Porangahau, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, on the information of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board, with failing to take adequate steps to cope with the destruction of rabbits. The defence was that, although poisoning and other methods had been employed, rabbits came from surrounding properties. The magistrate, Mr. Mowlem, said it did not matter where the rabbits came from; the onus was on defendant to take reasonable steps to check the pest. The law governing the matter could not be flouted, and any breaches must be treated seriously, in view of the heavy losses caused by rabbits in other parts of the Dominion. Defendant was fined £lO.
