TAURANGA FINANCES
COUNCIL’S GOOD POSITION MAYOR TO RETIRE (Special tp THE SUN) TAURANGA, To-day. A statement presented by the treasurer of the Tauranga Borough Council, which held its final meeting last evening, showed that the general account was in credit to the extent of £653; the town hall account, to £4SO; and the electricity account, to £12,032. A letter was received from the chamber of commerce expressing the chamber’s appreciation of the work the council had done in improving and repairing the streets. Mr. J. W. Mawson, Director of Town Planning, wrote to say that he would be in Tauranga on May 9 to confer with the Mayor and town clerk regarding town-planning work. He would be willing to address a public meeting on that date, and the council decided to make the necessary arrangements. Advice was received from the Prime Minister that the representations regarding the extension of the railway to Opotiki had been noted for consideration. The council expressed its regret that the Mayor, Mr. B. Dive, was not seeking re-election. Mr. Dive has been Mayor for the past 10 years, and a motion of appreciation of his services was carried.
