CRIME IN AUCKLAND
COURTS KEPT BUSY FOR QUARTER MANY CRIMINAL CHARGES A crime wave seems to have passed over Auckland during the past three months ending March 31. During that period the work of the Auckland Police and Magistrate’s Courts was very heavy, the number of criminal charges against men being 2,095 and the number against women 164, a total of 2,259. The figures for the previous quarter were 700 and 63 respectively. There were 78 civil and 118 criminal sittings during the past quarter, compared with 89 civil and 109 criminal sittings in the previous quarter. Last quarter £4,035 11s was paid in civil fees and £493 Is 5d in criminal fees, while the amount paid in fines was £1,351 19s lOd, making a total of £5,880 12s 3d. The respective figures for the previous three months w'ere £3,658 13s, £554 10s 4d and £1,667 7s, the total being £5,880 10s 4d. A total of 3,764 plaints was entered, the total amount sued for being £73,824 Is 3d, as against 3,891 plaints for a total of £76,609 13s 7d in the previous quarter. During the first three months of the year 466 claims for pensions were filed, and of this number 248 were granted, 94 being refused and 124 being held over.
